Trade & Labour Unions Early action sought on Vizag dock labour board merger with port trust Our Bureau Kochi, May 1 The All-India Port and Dock Workers’ Federation has sought the intervention of the Union Shipping Minister for early merger of the Visakhapatnam Dock Labour Board with the Visakhapatnam Port Trust. Mr P.M. Mohammed Haneef, General Secretary of the Federation, said in a statement that the proposal of the Visakhapatnam Dock Labour Board (DLB) for its merger with the port trust was approved by the Ministry in February and that it had been communicated to the Chairman of the port for implementation. The items and conditions of the merger were placed before the Board of Trustees, which approved the same. According to the merger proposal, the Government had accorded sanction to appoint 347 selected and approved candidates in the Visakhapatnam DLB. He said the DLB passed a resolution in 2006 to appoint these 347 candidates as casual workers based on the powers vested in it under the relevant statutes. However, the decision was not implemented by local authorities and as a result of this, the DLB management could not collect levy from the stevedores, he said. The federation urged the Ministry to direct the authorities to take speedy action in the matter of appointment of these candidates as approved by the Government, as inordinate delay will affect the livelihood of the poor workers. The workers had already started a relay hunger strike since April 25 demanding early implementation of the Government order to provide employment to the listed and approved workers, he said.
