Letters Thesis, anti-thesis This is with reference to the editorial “fiscal salvo” (Business Line, May 1). In a situation where the prices of food, fuel and the construction and infrastructure materials are on the high, the main problem with the government is the increased fuel prices that are beyond control unlike the prices of food, steel and cement. If the farm gate prices of wheat in Punjab and Haryana are to be prevented from falling below the procurement price of Rs 1,000 a quintal, the government should be cautious. The production of wheat is estimated to be 75 million tonnes. The movement of the grain by rail is least-expensive and least-polluting. Should not the growers get the market-determined prices and the consumers in areas far away from the producing regions kept unhurt by higher wheat prices? T. V.
