Air India to put IATA programme in place

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi, May 2 Air India is in talks with the Geneva-based International Air Transport Association to put in place a Fuel Efficiency Gap Analysis programme that the airline hopes will help cut its annual fuel bill by Rs 300-400 crore.

The airline Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Raghu Menon, told Business Line that while issues relating to the pricing and taxation on ATF were beyond the airline’s control, the implementation of the programme could lead to a 5 per cent projected savings in fuel costs. The airline hopes to implement it during 2008-09.

The programme, which generally lasts 3-4 days, involves an IATA team interviewing senior management and operational staff, with the aim of identifying ways to help the airline further improve its fuel efficiency. Sources indicated that the three main operational areas covered include flight operations, flight dispatch and engineering and maintenance departments.

Previous circumstances

In earlier cases, the programme has identified areas like lack of sophisticated flight planning, too much water being carried on the aircraft and too much use of auxiliary power instead of ground power as areas that unnecessarily inflate the fuel bill. Last year alone, the adoption of the Fuel Efficiency Gap Analysis programme helped global airlines cut their fuel bill by $1.3 billion, an IATA spokesperson said from Singapore.
