Meet on goods and services tax on May 5

The Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers will meet here on May 5.

Apart from Finance and Taxation Ministers from all the States in the country, the department secretaries and tax commissioners will also participate in the meeting, which will discuss policy matters pertaining to Goods and Services Tax to be introduced in 2010-11, said the Kerala Finance Minister, Dr Thomas Isaac.

The Minister said here on Friday that a two-day national seminar on Centre-State relations in the background of the 13th Finance Commission would be held on May 6 and 7. The seminar is being organised jointly by the Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation and the State Planning Board.

The seminar will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, and presided over by the West Bengal Finance Minister, Mr Asim Dasgupta. The Finance Ministers of Maharashtra, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand and Haryana, will address the seminar.

The second day of the seminar will feature discussions on various aspects of Centre-State relations in four sessions. The discussions in the first session will focus on a review of the Centre-State relations on the fiscal front, while the subject of discussions in the second session will be ‘finance commissions and resources devolution’.

The third session will be on Centrally-sponsored schemes and the last session will look at the general aspects of Centre-State relations.
