Delay in border trade with China thru Nathula

Sarikah Atreya

Gangtok, May 2

The annual Indo-China border trade over the Nathula for the year will have to wait till May 19, according to the District Collector (East) Mr Vishal Chauhan.

The district administration will however continue to process applications of Indian traders for issuance of travel and security passes to enable them to take part in the border trade this year.

The trade, which was scheduled to begin from Thursday, has been postponed following “landslides at various places”, which apparently occurred between the Rinchengang trade mart and Donquengang in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) in China.

The landslides led to disruption in the road network which prevented the Chinese traders from TAR to come to Nathula.

Although the Sikkim Government was prepared for commencement of this year’s trading activities, the Union Commerce Ministry’s notice on Wedenesday evening to the State stalled the programme, official sources said here.
