Events Industry & Economy - Non-conventional Energy States - Andhra Pradesh Call to raise bio-fuel yield Our Bureau Hyderabad, May 4 Mr D.A. Somayajulu, Economic Advisor to Andhra Pradesh Government, has called for efforts to increase yields of jatropha and other bio-diesel plants. Addressing a seminar on ‘Biofuels and agribiotech industries in Andhra Pradesh – opportunities and challenges’ here on Saturday, he said a yield of 2.5-3 tonne a hectare would make it a success. “Trade deficit has been doubling, mostly due to the increasing oil bills. Non-oil energy resources such as natural gas and bio-diesel would go a long way in reducing the oil import bills. Besides, they could be a cost-effective substitute for costlier energy sources,” he said. The seminar was organised by Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry. ‘No threat’Mr Atluri Subbara Rao, President of FAPCCI, felt that growing bio-diesel in non-agricultural land would not be a threat to food security at least for the next 50 years. Besides, development of bio-energy would mean generation of more jobs, particularly in rural areas. The importance of bio-fuels was rapidly increasing with the price of oil ruling at $120 a barrel. He, however, felt that the focus should be more utilisation of non-food crops, including biomass and stalks of the plants. More Stories on : Events | Non-conventional Energy | Andhra Pradesh
