Textiles States - Tamil Nadu Jobbing powerloom owners seek revised charges G. Gurumurthy Coimbatore, May 4 Powerloom cloth producers in Tamil Nadu, already worried about high input costs, are to face a demand for higher conversion charges being raised by the loom owners on job-work. The district coordination committee, representing the job-working powerloom owners from five weaving clusters in Coimbatore district, is to meet at Somanur near here on May 5. It will look to come out with a common demand for revised conversion charges payable by the textile producers. According to Mr Era Velusamy, President of the Palladam Job-working Powerloom Owners Association, revised job-work charges are due after the three-year settlement with textile producers’ forums in the district in 2005 expired this year. His association has already presented its demand for revised charges to the textile producers of Palladam cluster. Since the increase in the jobbing charges demanded by the units ranged from 25 per cent to 100 per cent of the existing charges, the committee is to synthesize the demands and arrive at a common minimum increase, based on the quality of fabric and weave pattern. Currently, the jobbing powerloom units collect a base conversion charge of Rs 2.50 a pick of weave (a metre of cloth will have 56 to 60 picks depending on the quality of the fabrics to be woven) and the average minimum conversion charge realised each day for a powerloom at present works out to Rs 150.
