Foodgrains Maize prices up on high transport cost Our Bureau Coimbatore, May 5 Maize prices in the market yard have moved up marginally this week to Rs 7,160 a tonne. The average yard price this April has been Rs 7,150, lower than the Rs 7,241 quoted in the corresponding period last year. According to the price data from the US Grains Council India market report, the price of maize delivered to the end-users this year is still higher due to increase in other costs, including the transport cost and levies. The report citing the market information said the price of other coarser grain, namely pearl millet (bajra) too, went up this week to touch Rs 7,410, some 1.8 per cent higher than last week with its average price for April being higher at Rs 7,339 than Rs 7,119 in the corresponding period last year. Corn prices on the Chicago Board of Trade for the May and July delivery were quoted at $236-$242 a tonne and the indicated f.o.b. price being $253-$260 a tonne. Meanwhile, the poultry science expert and associate professor, Department of Poultry Science in the University of Auburn, Dr Manpreet Singh who undertook recently a sponsored-visit to India’s various poultry markets and met poultry processors is reported to have offered few inputs on enhancing the shelf life of poultry meat. One of the suggestions from him for the processors is on the use of anti-microbial during process and distribution that will enhance the shelf life of fresh chilled chicken from three days to 10 days, while maintaining the temperature at zero degree Celsius. The processors needed to do trials on their own on the type of organic acide (acetic/lactic) acid that can be used in the process after checking the pH of the meat, the report added.
