Kolkata, May 5 Aircel has expanded its footprint in eastern India with the launch of its GSM service in Kolkata on Monday. The company, which has already invested Rs 500 crore in the Kolkata Circle, hopes to double its investment here within the next one year.

According to Mr Gurdeep Singh, Chief Operating Officer of Aicel Cellular Ltd, the launch of the GSM service in Kolkata was with a Nokia-Siemens enabled network. The number of base transmitting stations currently stands at 550 and the same would be ramped up in due course. Aircel shall have on offer a competitive set of products and value-added services with localised content. These would include SMSs in Bengali and local information and entertainment offerings.

Mr Singh said Aircel was already present in nine telecom circles and has a customer base of 10.6 million. The launch of the Aircle service in Kolkata completes the company’s footprint in eastern India and marks its presence in 10 telecom circles.
