Go-slow continues at New Mangalore port

Our Bureau

Mangalore, May 6

Go-slow attitude of port workers continued at New Mangalore on Tuesday also.

A meeting of the port management with union leaders at the office of the Assistant Labour Commissioner in Mangalore remained inconclusive on Tuesday with the labourers sticking to their demands of receiving ‘speed money’ in cash rather than in cheque. Another meeting is likely to be held on Wednesday.

Port officials said that some workers are adamant on their demands. “Go-slow process is the work some unruly workers,” they said. The Assistant Labour Commissioner, who has taken up this matter, is discussing with the union leaders, they added.

With labourers at New Mangalore Port continuing with go-slow attitude in their work, the Association of New Mangalore Port Stevedores has said that this attitude is affecting the export-import trade in the region.

Mr M. Shekar Pujari, President of the Association of New Mangalore Port Stevedores, told Business Line that ships are going on demurrage.

Stating that fertiliser vessels are badly affected by this go-slow attitude, he said two vessels are in the port and their performance in only 30 per cent of the normal work. Another vessel is waiting at the outer anchorage. This is productivity loss and loss to the stevedores and export-import trade, he said.
