Karur textile units to down shutters today

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, May 6 The textile manufacturers covering the entire value chain in the handloom export centre of Karur will down shutters on Wednesday to protest against surging yarn prices and export of raw cotton.

The work stoppage was called by Karur Knitting and Weaving Factory Owners Association, one of the oldest textile trade bodies of the town whose members have suspended their work since Monday.

The textile exporters of Karur led by the Karur Textile Manufacturer-Exporters Association (KTMEA) will close down their units for a day in support of the strike, according to Mr V. Kumar, president of KTMEA.

The spiralling of yarn prices, according to Mr Kumar, on account of the unbridled export of raw cotton has rendered the textile production uncompetitive by Tamil Nadu-based manufacturers and threatened the survival of the Rs 4000-crore Karur textile industry.
