Hyderabad, May 8 The Andhra Pradesh Government is making arrangements to import red gram and palm oil while taking to supply them through fair price shops in the state from July.

“The Government will take necessary steps to ensure the availability of red gram and palm oil by importing the required quantity. The process has started and we expect to offer them in all the fair price shops in the next two months,” the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said after a review meeting here on Thursday.

The State is looking at offering red gram dal at Rs 30 per kg and palm oil at Rs 45 per litre and one kg of dal and one litre of oil per card.

IMPORTS

“As per initial estimates, we are looking at importing 18,000 tonnes of dal at Rs 4,000 per tonne and with the help of the Central Government we will get 13,000 tonnes of oil per month. The Centre will get the imported oil from Indonesia and Malaysia and the red gram from Mayanmar and other markets,” Dr Reddy said.

The Chief Minister said that last month out of the 1.88 crore white card holders around 11 lakh card holders did not avail the rice offered at Rs 2 per kg. The Joint Collectors have been ordered to look into why the rice was not lifted.

The State Government also decided to examine the possibility of issuing new white cards in districts where elections are not being held. The Government has hiked the limits to avail benefits in both urban and rural areas.

Dr Reddy added that there could be an additional subsidy burden of between Rs 200- 300 crore due to this action. Currently, the State Government provides a subsidy of Rs 2,500 crore under the public distribution scheme for rice, red gram dal and palm oil.
