Letters Saving power The West Bengal Governor, Mr Gopal Gandhi, has indeed shown the way (Business Line, May 9) by observing a voluntary power cut in the Raj Bhavan in Kolkata between 1.30 pm and 2.30 pm in the afternoon and 6 pm and 7 pm in the evening. While this is a welcome example, it will take much more for the perennial power shortage problem to be solved. If everyone, for instance, is conscious about saving energy, and much of the misuse in offices, public places and even homes is prevented, it will go a long way to address the problem. Refraining from using electric lights, and opting for natural lighting in offices and other places during day-time, wherever it is possible, switching off lights and computer terminals when they are not in use, using energy-efficient CFL bulbs, switching over to alternative energy forms wherever possible, etc., could help. Why cannot the authorities think of converting all the electric pumps on the farms and fields to ones that are driven by solar energy, even making some part of the installation free or offering subsidies in this regard?
