Chennai, May 9 Fast-forwarded and played-back data from the 2001 Census for Chennai show that in the present decade, the percentage of 18-28 year olds holding graduate degrees or technical diplomas (the ratio between the two being about 10 and 1), was 14 percentage points lower than in the 1980s, and will drop another six percentage points in the 2010s. Giving the large increase in absolute numbers, most of the increment could nevertheless be coming from the younger age group, despite the fall in their percentage share. But as it happens, even this is no longer the case. It was true in the 1990s. But in the present decade it is true only if one makes allowances for those who are trying, sometimes quite desperately, to remain young ‘at heart’.
