Strong demand for good liquoring teas in N. Indian sale

Our Bureau

Kolkata, May 11

Good liquoring CTC teas, last week, in North Indian auctions continued to meet with strong demand and sold readily at around last levels, according to J. Thomas & Company Pvt Ltd, the tea auctioneers. Remainder tended irregularly lower.

Western India sections operated actively with good support from local dealers and North India buyers. There was selective inquiry from Tata Tea while exporters operated on selected bolder grades.

In the orthodox auction, the whole leaf grades and larger brokens eased in value while smaller brokens were firm. Fannings were on easier trend. The CIS exporters operated with fair amount of support from West Asia shippers. The local dealers operated for the fannings.

Darjeeling whole leaf grades sold readily at firm to dearer rates. Brokens sold around last while fannings tended irregularly lower with quality. There was improved inquiry from traditional exporters and local dealers.

CROP

The March production figure for North India stood at 31 million kg, according to the Tea Board, was lower by 6.4 million kg as compared to the same month in the previous year. However, the improved crop in the South reduced the all-India deficit in March to 2.5 mkg. Cumulatively, January-March crop at 89.9 mkg was marginally ahead of that in the same period of last year.

INTERNATIONAL

Last week, Mombasa witnessed an irregular market for most grades, with fannings evoking strong inquiry. Pakistan packers operated strongly while there were useful inquiries from Sudan, Kazakhstan and Russia. There was a fair amount of support from Egypt, Yemen and other West Asian nations, the UK and Somalia.

The Colombo sale closely followed quality with selected liquoring sorts selling readily at firm to dearer rates while plainer categories eased in value.
