It became famous for wrong reasons, but today there are enough right reasons for cheer.

The Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation Ltd (TANSI) has, over the years, turned in an enviable financial performance, especially in 2007-08, when its net profit rose nearly seven times as much as in the previous year.

Though it is a familiar name, not many people know of its activities or its role in the development of small industries in Tamil Nadu.

Set up in the year 1965 as a conglomerate of 64 industrial units started by the Directorate of Industries and Commerce during the Plan periods when there was little industrial activity in the State, TANSI has carved a niche for itself in various areas, not necessarily low-tech —such as galvanised power transmission towers, microwave towers, heavy structurals of various kinds, deepwell hand pumps, wooden and steel furniture.

The Corporation had under its fold different kinds of industrial products such as steel and wooden furniture, die castings, machine tools, forgings, enamelled wires, foundries, electrical goods, machine shops and tool rooms, heavy structurals, galvanising, light engineering etc.

Some of the products it produces are sold to top notch technology organisations such as Indian Space Research Organisation, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd and Hindustan Aeronauticals Ltd.

With the development of various units by private entrepreneurs, TANSI has slowly phased out its activities from certain fields.

Now, it has 23 production units and 11 project cells functioning.

There are two sales centres at Chennai and Tiruchi to show case and market the products.

TANSI has also been supplying various items required for the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Operation Black Board Scheme, installing of pumps for drinking water on turn-key basis during drought and supply of pumps and pump spares all over the State.

The year 2007-08 was a particularly good one for TANSI.

During the year, the Corporation bagged a work order worth Rs 69.08 crore for supply of benches and desks to the schools under the Nabard finance scheme and supplied furniture worth Rs 65 crore.

The remaining portion of order will be completed soon.

Two pump units and three fabrication units of TANSI and Tamil Nadu Paints and Allied Products Ltd (TAPAP) have obtained ISO-9001:2000 Certification.
