‘Tea lounge’ opened in Coimbatore

Showcasing specialty grades for connoisseurs

The estate is planning to go the ‘bean junction’ way by displaying the different grades of teas and allowing the customer to ‘mix and match’ the blend.

Coimbatore, May 12

In a bid to promote speciality Nilgiris teas, Glenworth Estate Ltd has opened a ‘Tea lounge’ near the Assembly Rooms on Garden Road in Udhagamandalam.

“This is only a temporary arrangement. The idea is to create awareness for the ‘Nilgiris’ teas during the busy tourist season. We are eventually planning to establish a permanent Tea Lounge,” the estate’s Executive Director, Mr G. Udayakumar told Business Line.

Reiterating that Glenworth Estate was looking at a lounge and not a ‘tea store’ to popularise the Nilgiris grades, he said the idea is to enable customers “see, experience and buy” the teas of their choice.

The estate is planning to go the ‘bean junction’ way by displaying the different grades of teas and allowing the customer to ‘mix and match’ the blend. “We have set it up like a café. The visitor can taste the brew before buying the tea,” Mr Udayakumar said.

However, only quality Orthodox grades are being offered in the tea lounge. “CTC teas are available in the market,” he said, justifying the reason for showcasing these specialty grades.

The teas on offer include flavours such as lemon and ginger, naturals such as green tea, earl grey and plantation fresh and normal teas as well.

Although the teas currently showcased are from the company’s garden Glenworth, according to Mr Udayakumar, it is open to displaying specialty teas from other estates too.

Asked if Glenworth would look at expanding the concept to other places, he said, “We probably would, depending on the response.”
