New Products & Services States - Gujarat Aventis Pharma launches disposable insulin pen Our Bureau Ahmedabad, May 13 Aventis Pharma Ltd (Group Sanofi-Aventis), world leader and pioneer in diabetes care management, on Tuesday launched SoloStar, a new disposable insulin pen for the injection of Lantus to benefit patients with diabetes in Gujarat. More than 246 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes and the number is expected to rise to 380 million in the next 20 years. India, with a projected 41 million patients, is the ‘diabetes capital’ of the world but only 36 per cent of them (14.8 million) have been diagnosed so far. To increaseBy 2025, the number of diabetics in India is expected to increase to 70 million, that is, one in five diabetics in the world would be an Indian, according to Mr Susheel Umesh, Senior Director for Cardio-Metabolism Business Unit, Sanofi-Aventis. If both the parents are diabetic, there are 90 per cent chances that the offspring, too, would inherit the disease. In the case of one of the two parents being diabetic, the chances are 30 per cent, he added. The company, whose Lantus brand of insulin has 53 per cent market share in this segment, is eyeing this huge market in India. Globally, the market for diabetes treatment is nearly €2 billion, he told reporters here. After Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, with four million patients, has the second largest number of diabetics in India.
