Security Web Extras - Alliances & Joint Ventures UK, Israel cos keen on tying up with DLRL M. Somasekhar Hyderabad, May 13 International companies from the United Kingdom and Israel have evinced keen interest in developing decoy systems jointly with the Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL) here. Decoy systems, which are electronic equipment, are deployed by the Navy, especially to divert or seduce enemy missiles to wrong destinations, said Mr R. Sreehari Rao, Director of DLRL. While the DLRL can provide the software and key components of the technology required, there is possibility for hardware development and contributions by the foreign partner in a joint development initiative, he told Business Line. The DLRL, which has developed the indigenous Electronic Warfare (EW) system for the three Defence forces, is open to joint development projects with countries and companies, wherever it does not have technology expertise, Mr Rao said. Interestingly, the DLRL, the key electronics lab under the 52-lab network of the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) is involved in the joint development of a Direction Finding Communication Signal Analyzer with the Government of South Africa. A few systems have been handed over to the South African Government, he said. The Direction Finding antennae-based systems have strategic application in war situations and can be used to jam communication equipment. The DLRL has, through indigenous strengths, also miniaturised the equipment, making it light weight, portable and efficient to be used by a soldier. On new technology initiatives, Dr Rao said projects to develop miniature EW systems that can be put on platforms like Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), aerostats and satellites are being planned. The DLRL has firmed up a 5-year road map for the technology initiatives and has received adequate support and funding from the Centre. It is actively pursuing the objective of involving public sector units and private companies in the development of various systems and components, Mr Rao said. The larger focus and challenge is to miniaturise the systems and sub-systems to produce a workable miniaturised EW system in the near term, he added. The DLRL is also participating in the national initiatives on nano technologies, which have an important role in future technology developments.
