According to news reports, the US President, Mr George Bush has said that 350 million people in India can be classified as middle-class. This segment of the population is now getting more prosperous and has a large disposable income.

The President finds this huge market a good opportunity for exporting goods and services from the US. Mr Bush has not said that Indians and Chinese consume more of the foodgrains produced by them, thus restricting exports and pushing up prices in the world market. On the other hand, Mr Bush looks at the rising level of prosperity in India and China as an opportunity for his country to export more. What is wrong in such expectations? What is all the fuss created by our politicians?
