Events States - Tamil Nadu ‘Aptitude tests provide clues to candidate’s problem-solving ability’

Our Bureau Chennai, May 14 A large chunk of the student community today yearns for a job in a multinational IT or ITeS company that will earn them Rs 25,000-Rs 30,000 per month upon graduation. However, it has been estimated that the top eight IT companies (where most of the students wish to work) hire around 80,000 people annually, while 10 times that number pass out of engineering colleges every year. While the number of candidates eligible for such a job is huge, only a few qualify to work for these organisations. Why? According to Mr Balaji Chandrakumar, Associate Vice-President, Expertus, while educational institutions give students an academic foundation, a good academic performance does not guarantee one a job. Mr Chandrakumar was addressing students of the Audisankara College of Engineering and Technology, Gudur, as part of the BL Club lecture series. Expertus Pvt Ltd is one of the leading training outsourcing organisations in the world. With shrinking boundaries and time-zones, it was imperative that one competed not just locally but “internationally”. Hence, it is imperative that candidates understand the recruitment process and focus on the elements listed below to improve their chances of landing that dream job. A candidate’s communication skills are to a large extent dictated by his or her level of confidence, conviction and enthusiasm. The personal interview gives the selectors an opportunity to know the candidate better and to assess his or her suitability for the job. According to him, the key to success in an interview is self-knowledge. Before the interview, students should analyse their strengths and weaknesses to determine exactly what they would and would not want to communicate. The other key aspect in communication is language. While most institutions focus on English as a subject, not many emphasise on development of the spoken language. Though English is a foreign language, the good news is that it can be practised and picked up just like any other foreign language, he said. Student should also prepare to face aptitude tests that are used as a process of elimination when the number of applicants is sizeable. Aptitude tests give the selectors a good idea of the candidate’s reasoning and and problem-solving approach. It has been proven that people with higher aptitude generate solutions to problems faster and are quick learners too. Appearance is also a crucial element as it is the first detail one communicates during the interview and can often lead to a conclusion about one’s competence. While the elements listed above can help a candidate prepare for campus interviews, listening can help a person manage good relationships. Today, most jobs demand team-work and interpersonal skills.
