AP intends to join inter-State industrial corridor

Concept meeting scheduled for today

Initially, the State Government is proposing development of the 150-km stretch from Satyavedu near Nellore to Chennai.

Phalguna Jandhyala

Hyderabad, May 14 Andhra Pradesh intends to be part of the proposed Chennai-Bangalore-Mumbai industrial corridor. A concept meeting of the concerned State Government departments is scheduled to take place on Thursday on the issue.

According to official sources, the State Government would formally write a letter of intent to the Central Government for considering its request to join the proposed industrial corridor.

Initially, the State Government is proposing development of the 150-km stretch from Satyavedu near Nellore to Chennai and also development of the Nellore to Bangalore region covering Rajampet, Kadapa, Ananthapur and Hindupur.

“There is already a lot of development happening between Satyavedu and Chennai and the Bangalore-Ananthapur region is a hot zone for investments. Now the State Government is looking at developing the region from Nellore to Ananthapur inter-land through Kadapa so that it can become a quadrilateral industrial corridor covering the three States,” an official told Business Line here on Wednesday.

Infra focus

The State Government, on its part, is looking at the development of trunk infrastructure, which would include good road connectivity, strengthening the railway network, and inter-land development in the proposed route.

“If the proposal is accepted, then the whole Rayalseema area in the State, expect Kurnool district, will benefit by this industrial corridor. It is, however, too early to predict the investment required for the development or the amount of employment that it can generate in the region as we are in the concept stage of the proposal,” the official said.

During conception

The Central Government has already given in-principle approval for the Chennai-Bangalore-Mumbai industrial corridor on the same lines as the Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor.

“The Central Government, after approving the Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor, asked the Southern States for their proposals for a similar corridor. Originally, the Tamil Nadu Government had proposed the region between Chennai and Bangalore. But since this area would leave out a major region in Karnataka, it was later extended to Mumbai,” the official said.

He added that the original idea of Vellore to Bangalore region which would have included around 100 km in Andhra Pradesh was now being modified and would instead take the Hosur route, which will not touch the State.
