Goodies worth Rs 27 cr seized in Karnataka

Cash and materials worth Rs 27.5 crore, meant to induce voters, have been seized in Karnataka till date. This includes Indian made foreign liquor and spirit worth Rs 3.50 crore and Rs 17 crore in cash.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Mr Shankar Bidari, Additional Director General of Police, said that 1,705 cases have been registered for violation of provisions of Karnataka Excise Act.

Materials worth Rs 7 crore have been seized and 120 cases registered for attempt to induce voters by giving them saris, television sets etc.

Nearly Rs 17 crore in cash, suspected to have been used to induce voters, has been seized in 120 cases.

All the above figures were for the period from April 1 to May 14.

Tight security

Mr Bidari said that elaborate security arrangements have been made for the second phase of polling on May 16.

He said 66 constituencies in 10 districts of the State will go to the polls on Friday. Of the total 12,271 polling stations in these districts, 3,754 have been classified as hyper sensitive and 4,282 as sensitive.

Nearly 56,000 security personnel have been deployed in these places, he added.
