Tax payment

In the article “Improve methodology for ranking ease of paying taxes” (Business Line, May 13), the World Bank has ranked India 168 among 178 countries in terms of ease of paying taxes

In addition to the statutory audit under the Companies Act, 1956, the following are the certificates required for verification of payments to various departments — the Income Tax Audit under Sec 43AB of the Act; The Secretarial Audit; Audit certificates required by the Sale Tax, Excise and allied Departments; the certificate required for making remittances to non-residents to be submitted to the RBI; and, now, the half-yearly returns to be certified by a chartered accountant. There must be some relief for the tax payers.

With the elaborate and complicated returns to the various revenue departments and the audit reports mentioned above India may rank 178 in the near future with regard to ease of tax payment.
