Work pressure

– K.K. Mustafah

Farm workers enter a paddy field near Thrissur, Kerala. Farmers across the State have sought rescheduling of the implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) during the planting and harvesting season of paddy, as it has created an acute shortage of farm workers. The equal-pay-for equal- work for both men and women seem to be warding off male workers, as they get wages higher than Rs 125 provided under the NREGP and the high cost of labour cannot be met by the paddy farmers who are mostly in debt.
