Plastic units form cluster to set up mini tool room

Our Correspondent

Madurai, May 15 The Plastic Manufacturers Association (Plasma) here has formed a cluster for establishing a mini tool room to attend to the engineering needs of plastic units in and around Madurai.

New unit

The 31-member cluster will be setting up the unit at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore at SIDCO Kappalur Industrial Estate, near here and the District Industries Centre is assigning the land for it.

The works would be completed in a year’s time, according to Mr C.K. Sekar, Vice-President, Sourashtra Chamber of Commerce and former President of Plasma.

Engg needs

Speaking to Business Line, he said Madurai has a number of plastic units functioning in the small-scale sector and the formation of a common tool room to share the infrastructure facilities for attending to the engineering needs of the units was a felt need for a long time.

A two-member team from Sourashtra Chamber of Commerce visited the China Plas’08 fair held from April 17 to21 at Shangai and has identified 10 projects for investment, ranging from Rs 7 lakhs to Rs 2 crore.

A few projects, such as Air Bubble Film Extrusion and Profile Extrusion, have scope for exports.

In a discussion held recently, two members came forward to establish units in thermo-form cast PP and production of pet bottle with stretch blow machine, Mr Sekar added.
