Environment States - Kerala Kerala plans ‘our tree’ campaign Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, May 16 The Kerala Government will launch an ‘our tree’ campaign on the World Environment Day on June 5 with the objective of spreading greenery in the State to ward off the effects of global warming. The campaign will feature higher-secondary level and college students planting at least 10 lakh rain tree saplings across the State, the Minister for Forest, Mr Binoy Viswom, and the Education Minister, Mr M.A. Baby, said here on Friday. The campaign is being jointly launched by the Forest and Education departments. ‘My tree’The ‘our tree’ campaign this year follows the ‘my tree’ programme of last year which focused on school children. The students had then planted nearly 25 lakh saplings in their school compounds, vacant public places and the backyard of their homes. Last year, too, the programme was launched on the World Environment Day. Several lakh of students went around the countryside that day planting saplings supplied by the Forest Department. The schools that performed well in the campaign were also honoured with awards by the State Government. Mr Viswom said that at least 80 per cent of the saplings planted last year had survived and the students were still tending to them. The school children, too, will get a fresh supply of the saplings this year along with those in the higher secondary schools and colleges. More Stories on : Environment | Kerala
