Textiles States - Tamil Nadu Rising cotton, yarn prices: Textile producers down shutters for a day Our Bureau Coimbatore, May 16 Textile production in key weaving clusters of Karur, Erode and Coimbatore was hit today with several regional textile bodies in these places observing a one-day production stoppage. The weavers are concerned over the spiralling cotton and yarn prices coupled with infrastructure lacunae in weaving clusters, including lack of power supply that hurt textile production in the State. The textile trade activities in the home textile exporting centre of Karur came to a halt as over 3,000 production units associated with handloom, powerloom cloth productions, textile processors, including the dyeing and bleaching units and allied industry skipped work. The Tamil Nadu Textile Federation, an umbrella organisation of different textile trade affiliates, spearheaded the work stoppage in Karur. Similar work stoppage has been reported among the weaving clusters in the neighbouring Erode district and Palladam in Coimbatore. The textile trade bodies in these places organised a hunger strike also. According to a spokesman of the Karur-based Tamil Nadu Textile Federation, the home textile manufacturers have demanded among other things holding the price-line of hank yarns and improving the local infrastructure, including the water and power position for the weaving centres. The Karur Textile Forum to which seven different textile trade representative bodies are affiliated has urged the Centre to allow only surplus cotton for export and ban export of cotton wastes which is the raw material for home textile manufacture. It also urged the Government to strictly monitor the compliance of hank yarn obligation by the spinning mills to ensure adequate yarn supply to the handlooms. The forum has also called upon the Tamil Nadu government to find a lasting solution in handling textile industry effluents by establishing marine discharge through common infrastructure.
