Wind turbines provide major relief to TNEB

Feeding nearly a sixth of the total electricity generated

Early season

Wind season has started at least a week ahead of schedule in TN, which has helped TNEB to meet a part of the power demand.

Chennai, May 16 Wind turbines in Tamil Nadu are feeding as much as a sixth of the total electricity generated, providing major relief to the electricity board.

On Thursday, the wind turbines — in Tirunelveli and Coimbatore regions — fed as much as 30 million units (MU) to the grid, against a total consumption of 190 MU.

Officials of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) and wind turbine manufacturers say that the wind season started last week and peak wind speed is now a steady 12-13 m a second (or 43-46 km/hour). The average wind speed is 6-7 m a second (21-25 km/hour).

Of the 3,686 MW of installed wind capacity in Tamil Nadu, grid details on TNEB’s Web Site show that the turbines recorded an evening peak capacity of 1,816 MW.

TNEB pays a tariff of Rs 2.90 a unit for wind power.

According to power sector managers, the wind season has started at least a week ahead of schedule this year in Tamil Nadu and this has definitely helped the electricity board in meeting a part of the growing demand for power.

As the wind speed picks up, the contribution by wind turbines to the grid is expected to go up substantially.

The normal wind season in the State is from May to October, with the Tirunelveli belt having another season from November to March.

The evening peak demand on Thursday was 9,082 MW, which was also the instantaneous maximum demand met by the electricity board, and the morning peak demand was 8,796 MW, according to grid details on TNEB’s site. Thursday’s sustained peak demand was at 9,022 MW.
