Outsourcing Industry & Economy - Rural Development Corporate - Society & Development States - Andhra Pradesh GramIT to set up 10 more centres
Our Bureau Hyderabad, May 16 GramIT, the rural business process outsourcing service arm of the Byrraju Foundation, is in the process of establishing 10 more centres and possibly adding around 2,000 more people from villages in Andhra Pradesh. This BPO now provides services to some 10 corporates and Andhra Pradesh Government, employing more than 500 people. The effort is now under way to replicate its success by expanding the nature of services, according to Mr Verghese Jacob, Lead Partner, Byrraju Foundation. “The company serves about three Tata Group companies, a large telecom operator with customer support services in regional language and some of the human resource related functions for Satyam Computer. Having established processes, we are looking at expanding and serving more companies,” Mr Jacob said. Narrating the Satyam Computer experience, Mr A.S. Murthy, Director and Senior Vice- President, Satyam, said that work done by these rural BPOs is on par with the best. In fact, this works out about 40 per cent cheaper for us, he said. “Satyam, which employs around 53,000 people has nearly 3,000 people working on support functions including human resource area. We are in the process of shifting about 500 jobs to these rural BPOs,” Mr Murthy said. “Initially, it took us several months to transfer a process to these BPOs. But the time to transition has been cut short significantly from about six months to about two months,” he said. “GramIT now has centres in Jellikakinada in West Godavari district, Eethakota and Antarvedipalli in East Godavari and Kajulapalem in Guntur district of the State. We now have enquiries from several companies on how to go about setting these centres and for possible support,” Mr Jacob said.
