Solution to Blackberry issue soon: Raja

Our Bureau

New Delhi, May 17

The Communication and IT Minister, Mr A. Raja, on Friday said Canada’s Research-in-Motion had assured the Government that it would come up with a solution within a month to address India’s security concerns related to Blackberry devices.

“RIM has assured DoT that within the stipulated time of one month, it will come up with a solution for the purpose of monitoring,” Mr Raja said on the sidelines of a Telecom Equipment Manufacturing Association event.

DoT had earlier asked RIM to ensure that Blackberry services comply with the monitoring requirements of security agencies.

While the Government has asked RIM for the decryption codes, which will enable security agencies to track data transmitted through Blackberry devices, the Canadian company has so far refused.

DoT had also asked RIM to set up a local server within the country to enable adequate monitoring.

There are over one-lakh Blackberry users in India, according to official estimates.
