Inadequate export demand at Coonoor sale

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, May 18

Inadequate export demand and trade disturbances following Jaipur bomb blast caused irregularity in Sale No: 20 of the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) here when the offer totalled 13.11 lakh kg – higher than the average volume in any auction in the last two years.

Pakistan was quiet on leaf sales. It selected some blacker CTC dusts for Rs 52 a kg. The CIS was selective on bolder grades but at Rs 45 a kg level. Egypt chose blacker types for Rs 53. Poland lent some support for bolder grades.

“Brighter liquoring CTC leaf sold dearer by Rs 2 a kg, but bolder and medium brokens eased by the same level. Whole leaf orthodox gained Rs 2. Primary grades advanced by Rs 3-4. High-priced CTC dusts eased Rs 2-5. Plainers lost Rs 1-2. Primary orthodox dusts witnessed a weak demand.

There were some withdrawals for want of adequate bids. Residuals lost a rupee”, an auctioneer told Business Line.

Hindustan Unilever did not buy dust grades. It bought good medium leaf varieties.

Bought-leaf factories

No brand of CTC teas from bought-leaf factory entered Rs 100-level this week. Kannavarai Estate got Rs 93 a kg, Deepika Supreme and Professor Rs 88, Shanthi Supreme and Venkat Sri Rs 86, Green View Estate Rs 85, Hittakkal Speciality Rs 84, Highfield Estate Rs 83, Homedale Estate, Selva Ganapathy, Vigneshwar Estate and Aroma Estate Rs 81.

Among the orthodox teas from corporate sector, Chamraj got Rs 123 a kg, Colacumby Rs 108, Corsley Rs 107, Kairbetta Rs 106, Mailoor Rs 104, Curzon Rs 102 and Glendale Rs 100. Quotations held by brokers indicated bids ranging from Rs 44-46 a kg for plain leaf grades and Rs 65-88 for the brighter liquoring sorts. They ranged Rs 47-50 a kg for plain dust grades and Rs 65-82 for brighter liquoring sorts.
