Non-conventional Energy States - Tamil Nadu Trade body calls for boost to ethanol production Our Correspondent Madurai, May 18 The Sattur Chamber of Commerce and Industries has urged the Union Government to encourage the production and use of ethanol as alternative fuel. In a letter to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, chamber secretary Mr P.T.K.A. Balasubramanian pointed to the alarming rise in crude oil price and suggested production of engines that can run on ethanol and promoting the production and use of ethanol as alternative fuel. He said that while consumption of petrol and diesel was increasing globally, production of oil was decreasing with consequent increase in price. In India, oil refineries are incurring loss of Rs 300 crore a day. Only 30 per cent of the oil demand is met from domestic sources and the rest is imported using foreign exchange. There is also apprehension that crude oil would get exhausted in the near future. Attempts to find an alternative fuel, including bio-diesel, are all in preliminary stages.
