A more expensive shopping basket

Chennai, May 18

Take a look at the prices in the table and imagine a shopping basket this month comprising the following goods:

Britannia Marie Gold biscuits 200 gm, Horlicks Jar 500 gm, Surf Excel Blue 1.5 kg, Sunsilk Black shampoo 100 ml, Hamam soap 150 gm, 3 Roses Tea Dust 100 gm and Colgate Gel Blue 150 gm.

You would have paid Rs 422 for all these goods at the till.

The same time last year, you would have paid Rs 383 for all these items put together, Rs 39 less!

And, this does not even include edible oils for which prices almost doubled and have now cooled off.

If you were to include that, and branded atta as well, the difference in price paid this year against last year would have been even more stark.
