Spurt in demand at Siliguri tea auction

Our Bureau

Kolkata, May 19

Last week, the CTC teas at North Indian tea auctions followed the familiar pattern with selected liquoring sorts selling around last levels while the remainder were irregularly lower due to the decline in quality, according to J. Thomas & Company Pvt Ltd, the tea auctioneers.

The western Indian buyers continued to operate actively with good support from other internal and local dealers. Tata Tea operated selectively. There were good export inquiries for larger brokens and fannings. At the end of the week, the Siliguri auction saw a spurt in demand and, therefore, the appreciation of the prices.

In the orthodox section, selected clean good leaf varieties maintained last levels while remainder tended slightly lower following decline in quality. The CIS/West Asia exporters were active with some interest from the local buyers.

Darjeeling whole leaf grades sold at firm rates following quality. Liquoring brokens were steady while remainder tended lower. Traditional exporters were active with good support from local sections.

Leaf intakes in the first fortnight of May have been low, particularly in North Bengal.

Colombo market eased in value following a large weight of plainer teas on offer. Iran buyers were active but other export markets were subdued.

In Mombasa auctions, brighter liquoring sorts met with improved demand and sold at firm to dearer rates while the remainder were irregular. Sudan, Pakistan and the UK were active with Russia, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Bazaar and the Egyptian Government sector showing more interest. Yemen and other West Asia countries were active. Somalia showed interest in lower end of the market.
