Tribunal asks DoT to explain delay in filing appeal on Tata Tele

Our Bureau

New Delhi, May 19 The Telecom Dispute Settlement Appellate Tribunal on Monday asked the Department of Telecom to explain the grounds on which it was asking condonation for the delay in filing petition seeking claims of Rs 2,015 crore from Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Ltd.

DoT had filed its petition almost 10 months after the Supreme Court directed it to take the appeal back to the telecom tribunal.

During the hearing on Monday, DoT sought condonation for the delay. Tata Teleservices submitted that DoT will have to take permission for condonation from the Supreme Court itself.

The Government then sought to file a fresh appeal for condonation explaining its reasons better.

DoT had filed an appeal with the telecom tribunal seeking to impose a penalty of Rs 2,015 crore on the company for defaulting on payment of licence fee for fixed line telephone services in Karnataka.
