Thiruvananthapuram, May 19 The Kerala Government is planning to start hyper markets at Thiruvnananthapuram, Ernakulam, Kottayam and Thalassery at a cost of Rs 6.50 crore during this year.

This was announced by Mr C. Divakaran, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Animal Husbandry, while explaining the achievements and future plans of the departments under him on the occasion of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government completing two years in office. The Government will set up information kiosks in eight districts to disseminate awareness among dairy farmers about the services being extended by the Animal Husbandry Department and allied organisations. A video endoscopy unit in Kozhikode and six tele-pathology units in other centres will also be commissioned during the year.

Poultry village

The State Poultry Development Corporation will launch a ‘poultry village’ project to enhance production of eggs in the State. Besides, marketing centres will be established across the State with the objective of making available all the products of the Poultry Development Corporation to the consumers.

Explaining the achievements of the Government during the last two years, Mr Divakaran said the State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) opened 65 new ‘Maveli’ stores and 22 ‘Maveli’ medical stores during the period. Also, seven ‘Maveli’ mobile stores had been operating at different ‘Adivasi’ centres in the State.

The Government has sought central assistance for a Rs 57-crore project aimed at modernising the ration shops in the State, for which it has already allocated Rs 30 lakh. The Government has also completed the preliminary steps for establishing a food research institute at Konni.

Govt nod

He said the Government had given approval for a mega project to intervene in the market and control rice prices by maintaining a buffer stock.
