Climate & Weather Agri-Biz & Commodities - Climate & Weather Cyclone watch in Arabian Sea called off
Vinson Kurian
Thiruvananthapuram, May 20 The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) has withdrawn the cyclone watch in the Arabian Sea apparently in the face of invading westerly systems sweeping the northern fringes of the basin one after the other. The cyclone watch put out on Monday depicted a system of moderate strength making a landfall over Oman/Yemen around May 29. But the latest seven-day forecasts valid from Tuesday did not indicate any significant weather event for the region around that time. But consensus forecasts indicate that the rains over the southwest coast of India would lift after the initial monsoon burst blows over. This is attributable to a noticeable wind-down in the pattern of the cross-equatorial flows off the African coast. The lull could last until the first week of June, according to this outlook. Cyclonic circulationsMeanwhile, a prevailing deep western disturbance with an embedded cyclonic circulation nestling over central Pakistan, adjoining northwest Rajasthan and Punjab has already kicked up a lot of weather in north and northwest India. Another system has been forecast to get going in the north and northwest from Thursday. Land-based cyclonic circulations have sprung up towards the east of the country in line with the eastward movement of the parent westerly system. On Tuesday, these were traced to over Gangetic West Bengal and Assam and Meghalaya. The cool weather heralded by offspring thunderstorms, dust storms and squalls have ensured that the bulk of the heating of land is still skewed towards the southeast coast. On Tuesday, severe heat wave conditions prevailed in parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and north coastal Tamil Nadu. Wet spellAn active wet spell continues to hold in the east and many places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura. A few places in West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand and Bihar recorded moderate to heavy rain under the benign gaze of localised trough. The prevailing westerly had dropped a fair amount of rain over upstream Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and north Rajasthan as it exited these places overnight to foray into the east.
