Tobacco Tobacco fetches record prices Our Bureau Guntur, May 21 Tobacco farmers in Andhra Pradesh have got record prices this season, with the maximum price touching the Rs 130-a-kg mark and the average price being Rs 80 a kg, according to Mr. J. Suresh Babu, Chairman of the Tobacco Board, here. He told reporters here on Wednesday that the production in the State would be around 165 million kgs (mkg) against the authorised crop size of 158 mkg. So far, he said, 138 mkg of tobacco had been sold on the auction floors in the State at an average price of Rs 80.18 a kg, against the average price of Rs 47.40 a kg last year. He said the year “is a defining one for the crop, with favourable international market conditions”. The board on its part had taken a series of measures to ensure free and fair auctions, he claimed. The ceiling system was done away with. Mr Suresh Babu said the tobacco grown in the northern light soils of West Godavari district had fetched the maximum price of Rs 130/kg. He said the board had closed auctions on three floors and the auctions on the remaining floors will come to an end next month. More Stories on : Tobacco
