‘Parent industry, cluster formation vital for region’s development’

Our Correspondent

Madurai, May 21 Identification of a parent industry and a collective effort through cluster development, with the right perspective and attitude, are necessary for developing a region, said Mr R. Dinesh, Executive Director of TV Sundaram & Sons Ltd and Chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Madurai Zone, while addressing the 34th anniversary celebrations of Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (Maditssia), held here.

Stating that CII is willing to join with SMEs (small and medium enterprises) in shaping the focus for the industrialisation of the southern region, he said, while access to capital and marketing impacted the growth of SMEs beyond a point, equally necessary in the growth process were the perspective and focus of the promoters and the successive generations that carried on operations.

Though TVS started operations in the manufacturing sector, it spread to the service sector through TVS Logistics and has emerged as the foremost in the country, he said. Tourism as a service sector, offered good scope for development of Madurai, he added.

He presented the ‘Visvesvaraya Award 2007’ to Bharath Rubber (India), Madurai, given annually by Maditssia and All India Manufacturers’ Association to the ‘Best Small Scale Entrepreneur’ in the southern districts.

The Best Women Entrepreneur Award given by Maditssia and Sakthi Massala, for the first time, went to Selson Plastic Industries, Tirunelveli.

Mr Dinesh announced a contribution of Rs 1 lakh towards the corpus for instituting an award for the ‘Best Service Sector Entrepreneur’.

Mr N. Sivasubramanian, Senior Scientist and Chief General Manager, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Thiruvananthapuram, said that ISRO decided to source its parts for satellites from SMEs across the country that fit into aerospace norms and standards.
