Railways Industry & Economy - Coal Orissa curbs hit East Coast Railway’s coal handling Santanu Sanyal Kolkata, May 21 East Coast Railway’s (ECoR) coal loading has been hit, the average daily loading having dropped to around 10,000 wagons (four-wheelers) from the targeted 10,500. The Orissa Government’s restriction on day-time work and movement due to excessive heat in the State has brought down raising and transportation of coal, so much so that the stocks of Talcher coal at the railheads dropped to 60,000 tonnes a few days ago. This prompted the Union Coal Secretary to ask the ECoR to restrict loading only for power houses, shutting out other consumers, according to ECoR sources. Unfortunately, the loading of coal for National Thermal Power Corporation’s Kanhia plant too has remained suspended for about a week now due to the industrial unrest at the plant. ECoR loads on an average seven rakes a day for Kanhia plant – three from Talcher mines and four others from IB Valley mines. The unrest has totally stopped the loading at both the mines. CongestionThe loading of imported coal at Paradip too has been hit because of the non-availability of coal. For the past 10 days, there is no stock of imported coal on account of Steel Authority of India Ltd, according to ECoR sources. There is also the problem of congestion at the port. Mr K. Raghuramaiah, Chairman of Paradip Port Trust, would attribute the congestion problem at Paradip port to Haldia dock which remained closed to traffic for several days. As a result, Haldia-bound ships were now coming to Paradip, he observed. More Stories on : Railways | Coal
