Traders body seeks Speaker’s intervention in CST rate issue

Our Bureau

New Delhi, May 21 The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has urged the Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr Somnath Chatterjee, to ensure that a statement made by the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, in Parliament on cutting Central Sales Tax (CST) rate to two per cent be implemented.

In a letter to Mr Chatterjee, the CAIT said that the Union Government had not issued any notification on reducing CST from three per cent to two per cent and this had led to confusion . CAIT asked Mr Chatterjee to intervene and take “appropriate step” as the categorical announcement was made by the Finance Minister on the floor of the House. CST was reduced from four to three per cent last fiscal and was to be cut to two per cent from April 1.
