Human Resources Nasscom’s suggestions for IIITs Our Bureau New Delhi, May 22 In response to the Prime Minister’s announcement that 20 new Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) would be set up as part of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan, Nasscom, the country’s apex body of software companies, has presented a detailed project report to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). Nasscom has proposed that each of the IIITs be set up as a fully autonomous institution, through a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The partners in setting up the IIITs would be the MHRD, Governments of the respective States where each IIIT is to be established, and industry members. Considering the importance of location in making these institutions centres of excellence, Nasscom has recommended 20 locations. The association has suggested sustainable linkages with industry and an environment conducive for research excellence so that the IIITs become cutting-edge institutions. Skill gap“Addressing the current skill gap is vital for the IT industry to maintain its growth trajectory and move up the value curve. Skill gap here refers not only to the low employability of the current graduate pool but also to the future needs of the industry in frontier technologies and functional domains,” Mr Som Mittal, President, Nasscom said. “While the former will be addressed through upgrading the curriculum, facilities and faculty development in academic institutions, the latter will require academic institutions and industry to collaborate in pre-competitive research and develop specialisations. “Given the increasing requirements of the IT industry, it is also important for the new institutes to scale up beyond the conventionally accepted numbers at under-graduate, post-graduate and doctoral research levels,” he added.
