Plantations Arecanut area expanding in north, south Karnataka, Kerala Aravindan Kottayam, May 23 The market continues to be steady while the arrivals have slightly improved. The quality of the arecanut reaching the market is reported to be low as a result of the summer rains during the peak drying period. North Indian demand has not picked up to a better level. The area under arecanut is rapidly expanding in North Karnataka, South Karnataka and parts of Kasargod in Kerala. In north Karnataka, where labour is very cheap, area under arecanut is expanding at a faster rate, according to Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (CAMPCO) Ltd. Production is likely to increase further once the new areas are ready for harvest. The arecanut growers feel that any price above Rs 60.00 a kg for new arecanut is remunerative and they are also content with what they get at present. The price is now ruling at 68-76 a kg for new arecanut and Rs 77-84 a kg for Kottadakka Choll. COCOAThe price of cocoa is now ruling steady without much ups and downs in the market. The arrivals have improved as a result of better production. But during the rainy season from June to August, the production is likely to be low. More Stories on : Plantations
