Aquaculture Shrimp farm industry seeks introduction of new variety Our Bureau Chennai, May 23 Aquaculture industry representatives led by the Society of Aquaculture Professionals, a Chennai-based organisation of the shrimp farm industry, have sought the introduction of a new shrimp variety for farming. According to a press release from the society, at a recent workshop to discuss issues relating to shrimp farming, industry representatives were of the view that L. vannamei, a species of shrimp popularly cultured in the South East Asian countries, could be introduced in India. Now this species is only permitted on a trial basis with two groups licensed to import and farm them under controlled conditions. A decision on allowing imports has been pending for long. Industry revivalThe traditional culture of black tiger shrimps was constrained by outbreak of diseases, while low prices in the market were affecting viability of the industry, the release said. Mr Tarun Shridhar, Joint Secretary, Union Agriculture Ministry and representatives of the Coastal Aquaculture Authority were present on the occasion.
