Expand list of items traded at Nathula: Chamling

Sarikah Atreya

Gangtok, May 23 The Sikkim Chief Minister, Mr Pawan Chamling called on the Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil in New Delhi on Thursday and urged him to expand the list of items that can be traded at the Nathula border with China which would make the exchange more viable and purposeful.

Among the other subjects discussed was that of providing electoral reservation to the Limboo and Tamang communities, Mr Chamling impressing on the Home Minister the need for an early solution to the issue.

Mr Chamling reminded Mr Patil of the problems faced by vehicular traffic on the West Bengal portion of NH 31A in the wake of frequent bandh calls.

The Chief Minister also apprised the Home Minister of the steps taken by the State Government to harness the hydro electricity potential of the State as per the norms and guidelines issued by the Central Government.

On the issue of proper air connectivity of Sikkim with the entire country, Mr Chamling reiterated the demand for the provision of a ten-seater twin-engine helicopter service to Gangtok pending completion of the new Pakyong Airport, which is likely to be commissioned by July 2011.
