Aravind Eye Care System (Aravind Eye Hospitals, Madurai) has won the $1-million Gates Award for Global Health, 2008, the world’s biggest prize for international healthcare. The award has come in recognition of Aravind’s “groundbreaking work to prevent debilitating blindness and provide affordable, world-class eye care to the poor,” according to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
