Roads damaged by overloading

It might be interesting to note the extent of damage the overloading of goods vehicles cause to the roads. In a reply to a query raised by the All India Confederation of Goods Vehicles Owners’ Association, the Department of Road Transport and Highways pointed out that if the load increases by two times, the damage to roads will be 16 times. As it has been explained, the roads are designed for cumulative number of standard axles, which again depends upon the vehicle d amage factor. The VDF, which is defined as equivalent number of standard axles per commercial vehicle, varies with the vehicle axle configuration, axle loading, terrain, types of road etc. Assuming that all other factors, except axle load, remain the same, the overloading of a vehicle with standard axle load up to 10 per cent, 30 per cent, 50 per cent and 100 per cent may cause damage to the road to the extent of 46 per cent, 186 per cent, 406 per cent and 1,500 per cent respectively.
