Fish workers seek legislation on coastal biodiversity

Our Bureau

Mangalore, May 25 The National Fishworkers’ Forum (NFF) has urged the Union Government to enact legislation for conservation of coastal and marine biodiversity.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Mr Harekrishna Debnath, Chairperson of NFF, said that if the Government of India is sincere in protecting the coastal zone and community, it should enact a national legislation for conservation of coastal and marine biodiversity that protects the traditional fisher people’s preferential access and historic-use right to coastal and marine resources.

In getting true responses from people, it (the Union Government) should direct the State Governments to disseminate the draft at every panchayat across the country, he said.
