Mangalore, May 27 The role of the MSME (micro, small and medium enterprises) sector in the development of the country and the strategies to develop the sector were discussed at ‘mSME Connect’, organised by the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) and Corporation Bank here.

Inaugurating the programme, Mr M. Narendra, Chief General Manager of Corporation Bank, said that ‘mSME Connect’ is aimed at giving leadership skills to entrepreneurs by the management experts. He said it will also help create inputs and skills for sectoral development.

Stating that there are immense opportunities in MSME sector, he said such programmes help entrepreneurs to reap benefits from the sector. He urged entrepreneurs in the sector to have a clear roadmap for the development of the sector.

Citing some examples, Mr Narendra said that the proactive approach of the entrepreneurs in MSME sector will help them reach the mid-segment. “I have seen this happening in the last 10 years,” he said. Such units will reach corporate segment, if they continue with their proactive approach, he said.

Explaining about ‘Corp Excel 2008’ — national mSME excellence awards for 2008 — he said all MSMEs, whether customers of the bank or not, are eligible to participate.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr M.S. Moodithaya, Director of the Justice K.S. Hegde Institute of Management, said that retention of talent is a bigger challenge for small organisations. The MSME sector should stress on talent management.

He said that India had traditional industrial units three centuries ago. However, all the traditional industries did not mature into modern industries. He suggested various strategies for the better management of MSME sector.
